From the administrator's view, updating a connector is tricky - at least if you don't want to fill all its properties from the beginning (nobody wants that).

Example:
When upgrading AD connector from 1.3.4.3 to 1.3.4.11 without losing properties, you can:

1. Replace the connector in Tomcat deploy, restart
2. Refresh the browser by Ctrl+F5 (this is necessary for refreshing the set of connectors)
3. For every system connected by AD connector:
   1. Go to Configuration, select the AD connector. Ignore the warning about losing current configuration; if you don't close the page, the configuration will stay.
   2. Fill in "Principal password" again (this attribute gets lost during update)
   3. Click "Test connector" or "Save" before you close the page.

Ideally, only the first step would be necessary. Plus some easy way to configure the version of the connector, which is currently used.

If there is some better way to update connectors in current IdM, please let me know, or better: write a tutorial :-)
